One thing that became so crucial – even more than I had thought it would be – was food. So many times I would skip meals, or eat my dinner for breakfast because I didn’t get a chance to eat it for dinner the night before. Getting enough food became the topic of discussion in my mothers groups, where all of us were struggling with the same things.
You aren’t sleeping so you need to make sure that you get your energy from your food. Because of that, your food needs to be nutritious, healthy and wholesome because your body just went through a marathon of childbirth and you need to gain that energy and strength back. What you put in your body can help or hinder this process. Too often I was skipping meals or eating junk food to fill me up, which didn’t actually fill me up like I needed.
Food effects our moods, our brains ability to function, and our whole body. Life with a new baby needs all hands on deck – your body and mind need to at their best. moms need to be nurtured, too. You know how you feel when you don’t eat properly for a long time? Imagine being very sleep deprived, always having a baby in your arms and loosing track of your days and weeks – how can you be expected to prepare the type food you need? It’s very tough. Most new moms are in exactly the same place.
One of the mothers in our group was having a really hard time. She and her husband were completely exhausted. Just feeding themselves was becoming a huge chore. She started to miss our weekly meet-ups, and we got concerned about how she was coping. So we did what we knew we would have wanted others to do for us – we fed her.
Between our group we each picked a day on which we would cook for her. We then dropped off our meals at her house during the day, taking that one more burden off of her mind. It made a world of diference and she was very grateful for her mothers group community taking the time to nurture her and her husband while they got through their sons sleep issues.
