It’s illegal because it’s kind of a big deal and potentially life-threatening. Pennyroyal is a poison in essential oil form, for example.
That’s a job for Chamomile! Chamomile (the dried herb) is all about anxiety-related indigestion. Feeling sick because you’ve got a wicked fever? Ginger baby, lets get the blood-flowing to your intestines and break that fever. Got diarrhea? Step away from the Ginger, it’s only going to make things worse because it’s a stimulant. So you see, all three Peppermint, Chamomile, and Ginger are for upset stomachs but there are different kinds of upset stomach and it matters when deciding which herb to use.
If these remedies just didn’t work because we were using them for the wrong things, that’s one thing. The problem is not just that you’re not getting the proper relief, but you’re also harming your body. If you take peppermint oil internally because you feel nauseas or have heartburn, you kill all the good bacteria that your body needs to function well. Want to cure your heartburn? Drink some apple cider vinegar in water with baking soda. Insta-cure. It’s awesome. Had my first and last heartburn a year ago and I felt like I had drank cheap liquid magic. Because that's what I did.
Also, Oregano oil: Oregano is anti-bacterial, not anti-viral. Colds and flus are caused by viruses. Viruses are better attacked through the respiratory system most of the time, anyway (aka, breathe in your essential oils, don’t drink them) and Oregano is fairly useless in this department. There are so many great anti-viral essential oils! Oregano is not one of them. You’ll also do a nice job of killing all your gut bacteria (that you need) layering your yucky cold with a nice cocktail of indigestion. Yes, sometimes we get sick because we have a bacterial infection, so yes, you might feel better sometimes after taking Oregano oil. But then we need to talk what kind of bacterial infection do you have, because the oil of choice will differ with this detail as well…
Take home message: there is no cure-all. Treat (and respect) essential oils like you would pharmaceutical drugs because they are that potent. Don't mess with them if you don't know what you are doing. Don’t go taking essential oils willy-nilly without consulting someone who’s extremely well-versed in essential oils and biology, and please stop destroying your guts. We live in Canada: after a big hearty poutine, you’re going to need all the pro-biotics you got.
Now, excuse me while I go put away my soapbox…
